How “Heal Mary” Can Help You to Access Clinical Trials

Published by on September 8, 2021 | Share your thoughts

Don’t you just love it when you meet someone who’s work inspires you to your core? That’s how I felt when I had the chance to meet Cassandra Hui. Cassandra is the founder of a clinical trial platform called “Heal Mary”. Her personal story is heartbreaking – AND incredibly inspiring… Why did Cassandra start Heal Mary? When Cassandra’s mom was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, Cassandra did everything she could to find help. It wasn’t long before she was confronted with the giant gap between what standard care in Canada could offer her mother and what was actually available through clinical trials. This fuelled Cassandra – out of her own need and frustration – to start an organization that could help connect cancer patients...

So you can make the most educated decision about your cancer care. Here we go… MYTH #1: Clinical trials are inferior to standard care. The 2 Main Factors in Cancer Treatment Success…

Published by on August 11, 2021 | Share your thoughts

What Sarah learned about cancer treatment success, the hard way… “How do I reach the people who actually need to hear this now?” Sarah is frustrated.  Really frustrated… For over 20 years, she worked in the healthcare system. She saw first-hand the disorganization, the misplaced files, the budgetary cuts. It wasn’t anyone’s fault directly – it’s just the nature of a giant, slow-moving bureaucratic system… A system that both Sarah and I are deeply grateful for, despite its shortcomings. We both know that we are beyond lucky to live in Canada and to be able to benefit from our healthcare system. And… Like me, Sarah definitely had an insider’s insight into the challenges that occur when there’s not enough budget and too little time. Still,...

Published by on July 28, 2021 | Share your thoughts

And how you may be able to avoid chemo, too… Seven years ago, Lisa’s life changed forever.  She and her husband were living on Vancouver Island in a lovely home they’d built together. They were living their middle-aged years in style… Playing music together, gardening, cooking, and heading out to the local jazz clubs for fun. Lisa worked as an assistant at a law firm – a job she enjoyed. Her office had an excellent work culture, which she appreciated. Life was good. Until Lisa found a lump in her breast, driving home from work one day. “I just got a shooting pain and put my hand there and felt it right away. There was no warning.” The next morning, she went to her doctor. ...

He’d been diagnosed with lung cancer in 2011…which soon escalated to stage 4 lung cancer. After a long road of chemo, he finally decided to take matters into his own hands. He had no choice. Our cancer expert, Alex Rolland, got him genetic testing and a far more accurate diagnosis than he’d ever received from standard care. Alex also gave Thomas and his oncologist some excellent targeted treatment recommendations, which they were able to access. Thomas is now getting those drugs covered through Pfizer’s compassionate care...

Cancer Patient Advocacy: How to Be the Squeaky Wheel

Published by on December 16, 2020 | Share your thoughts

“Be the squeaky wheel.” That’s what Annette kept hearing people tell her when she was diagnosed with stage IV cancer. She and her husband were ready to do anything.  They wanted to squeak…but as Annette shared: “How are we supposed to be the squeaky wheel when we have no idea what to squeak about?” She’s right. It’s a chicken and egg situation. It’s impossible to advocate for yourself when you don’t even know what to advocate for! You know there are probably way better diagnostics and treatments than you’ve been offered through standard care. But you don’t know what they are… And if even you did, you still don’t know how to ask for them, or whom to ask… So you’re stuck feeling confused about...
