How can you access the exact right cancer treatment for your form of cancer? That’s what I’m about to share with you.

But first…

Allow me to vent, just for a moment.

I’m tired of cancer patients coming to us too late.

I’m tired of hearing people say, “we wished we’d known about you sooner.” (If you want to avoid this, book a 30-min free call with me now.)

Given the amazing success that patients have with our Precision Oncology Program when they finally get the right cancer treatment – and the consequences that cancer patients experience when they don’t know this stuff – it just breaks my heart when folks come to us too late.

And…I get it.

You want to trust that your doctor knows best…

You want to believe them when they say you’re getting the best care.

It’s scary to try and figure out who you can trust and what is actually going to help you vs. just waste your time and money.

You don’t want to buy into false hope and it feels good to think that everything that can be done is being done.

So often people don’t look beyond standard care until they:

♦️ are Stage IV with metastases (which we can almost certainly help with),

♦️ have no surgical options (also we can likely help),

♦️ are only being offered Chemo and/or Radiation (we can help)

♦️ have “no more treatment options left” according to their oncologist (almost certainly we can help)…

Yes, my team can almost always provide valuable time and quality of life in all of those situations.

But the situations that get to me are the ones where it’s just too late…

When it’s too hard to keep solid food down, and you just don’t have the energy or immune system left to tolerate any treatment, no matter how beneficial it could be.

When a treatment that just 6 months or even 3 months earlier could have added years to your life, you are now too unwell for just a short while later.

If only you had called just a few months earlier!

The Tough Part of Cancer Care Advocacy

These situations devastate me because there is nothing I can do in that moment to get back that time and give you that chance at life.

It’s the absolute worst part of being a cancer advocate for me – the missed opportunities; the unnecessary deaths.

When a client of mine dies, as sometimes they do, it is a sad day and I mourn them dearly.

But, I don’t feel regret. I don’t feel angry.

I just feel a deep sense of loss.

And I think that is healthy and comes with the territory.

My clients are pretty awesome people – they’re folks who were just going about their lives when they got blindsided by cancer and the disease took over.

So when I can help someone take control of their lives again and have years that they otherwise would not have had, that definitely makes my work (and the emotional ups and downs of it) all worthwhile.

In fact, there are many elements of being an advocate for cancer patients that are challenging to say the least.

But, hands down, the most excruciating part of my job is when I pick up the phone and someone starts to tell me their story of cancer and how they’re being told they are out of options and is there anything we can do to help…

To know that the person I’m speaking with doesn’t have to be in this position at all – things did not have to get this bad.

If only they had been a little more curious about options for their cancer.

If only they had been able to have an open discussion with their doctor about other options without feeling guilty or bad for wanting to explore other options…

If only they had known how to figure out what is truly a good option and what is a waste of their time and at best only going to give them false hope…

If only they had felt like they mattered enough; that they were worth it! If only they knew about us earlier…

Things would have been different.

And it breaks my heart.

A Personal Story That Hits Home

Case in point:

Today I spoke with a lady with advanced cancer named Sandra. She is 38, a single mother of a 13-year-old, no other family.

Sandra was told, after receiving diagnosis of cancer, and surgery about 6 months later, that she was cancer free. That she could go home and live her life.

She received no treatment other than surgery.

At the time, she thought this was odd. There was also no follow-up monitoring, no blood tests, no scans.

No diagnostics to ensure the cancer was truly gone.

18 months later, she felt a pain in that same area of her body.

The cancer was ‘back’. (It had likely never really gone away.)

And now the cancer had metastasized to her bones and brain. Sandra’s oncologist told her there were no more options.

So she called us.

Often we are able to help no matter what your stage – as in, 95% of the time, our team can help people get more time and then some, even if they are stage 4.

But Sandra – a mother desperate to live and be there for her child, and who’d fully trusted in her doctor – was one of the 5% cases where it really and truly was too late.

She could no longer keep food down by the time she reached out to us.

I knew that, no matter how much I wanted to say we could help and even if we found a treatment for her, that her body would not be able to tolerate it. It was too late.

And this is just one of about 20 such calls I’ve received this week alone – and it’s only Wednesday as I write this!
