What’s your ‘why‘?
That’s a big question. And one that many cancer patients are likely probably facing as they meet cancer head-on.
You know…the deep-down reasons for wanting to get better. Maybe it’s your family, or the dreams you want to pursue, or that trip you want to take, or the granddaughter you want to meet, or that wedding you want to attend.
The things that motivate you to keep trying, to keep fighting, to keep pursuing better treatment options.
Despite all the challenges and fear and heartache and rollercoaster emotional ups and downs.
Just as anyone facing a life-threatening illness is faced with these big existential q’s…
So, too, are the professionals who devote their lives to medicine.
Why do doctors and medical scientists devote their lives to saving others?
Alex Rolland, our Chief Research Scientist, has his own story of what drove him to dedicate his life to helping people to beat cancer.
You can hear Alex talk about his own journey in cancer care, and why he’s so passionate about helping cancer patients, in this video.

He studied and studied and studied some more. And while he was studying, he also worked directly with cancer patients on the front lines, everyday, asking them about their experience and figuring out how to make it better.
From a young age, Alex saw many of his loved ones getting cancer and then passing away. It broke his heart.
And, being a born & bred scientist, it also caused him to question – deeply – what the medical system could do to improve cancer patients’ lives and survival rates.
Alex Rolland’s cancer care journey
Alex has been working in the field of personalized cancer medicine (aka precision oncology) for decades…long before it started to enter the medical mainstream.
And while precision oncology slowly becomes more integrated in the Canadian public healthcare system, Alex started CTOAM to be able to help cancer patients, NOW, to access the best cancer care medical science can provide no matter where they live.
Because, through his personal experiences, Alex knows that accessing the best genetic testing and getting the right targeted therapy or newest surgical options is what saves lives. It can often make the difference between life and death.
When it comes to cancer, knowledge is power!
And Alex is determined to give as many people as possible the ability to choose ‘life’.
