And it makes me sad!
In an ideal world, no one should need to think about money when it comes to their health…
Especially with something as serious and challenging as cancer.
It’s honestly really messed up that money plays a role in this.
And yet…
The lesson that I keep learning about healthcare is:
We must deal with the reality of the way things are NOW, first, in order to have a chance at changing them in the future.
That’s why our cancer expert, Alex Rolland, and I made this video – to explain why the best cancer care still costs patients out-of-pocket money in Canada.
Stay Informed and Know ALL of Your Options
It’s important to have a good understanding of this –
So you can make informed choices that are best for YOU.
The main point?
The most important thing for every cancer patient is to ensure they get the right treatment asap and have the best possible chance of a long and healthy life…
Right now, in Canada, the only way to guarantee that is for cancer patients to take it upon themselves to engage a service like CTOAM and get a more accurate diagnosis, and a more personalized treatment plan that their oncologist can then prescribe – with treatments covered through public health care!
And until Precision Oncology becomes more integrated within Canadian standard care, cancer patients will need to pay out-of-pocket to access the best diagnostic tests and newest treatments.
And that could be many, many years from now…which is time that most cancer patients just don’t have.
It’s just the way it is.
I know it’s a hard pill to swallow.
In my day-to-day work, I try to hold space for these two opposing feelings:
Feeling grateful for our public healthcare system and everything it gives Canadians…
And, feeling frustrated that the level of standard cancer care also means that folks are forced to settle for subpar care – and, therefore, suffer the all-too-real consequences, like dying much sooner than needed or with a reduced quality of life.
